In April 2016, Water. Desalination + reuse (Faversham House) reported, citing Desalitech, that the firm's ReFlex reverse osmosis process reached 94 percent recovery without silica scaling at the Kay Bailey Hutchison brackish desalination plant in El Paso, Texas. The University of Texas research centre CIDS had run a containerised pilot with standard membranes for eight months, after setting it up in June 2015. The full-scale 110,000 m³/day plant ran a conventional system at 82.5 percent recovery. Silica supersaturation in the trial reached 273 percent.
The report showed that recovery had become the key lever for inland desalination, since every percentage point less concentrate reduced costly disposal.
