In June 2017, Water. Desalination + reuse (Faversham House), citing Daiji World, reported that authorities in the Indian port city of Mangaluru were proposing a desalination plant of 200,000 m³/day. The city lies on the Arabian Sea in Karnataka state. The scheme was to be a public-private partnership costing around INR 1,500 crore (about 233 million US dollars). It was to supply households and industry in the district. Earlier, Karnataka's urban development minister Roshan Baig had suggested that officials tour the Nemmeli and Minjur plants near Chennai.

The report showed that after Chennai, a city on India's west coast was also examining seawater desalination. At the time the scheme was a proposal, not yet a decision.
