State comptroller faults desalination shortfall, Israel

In October 2018, Hamodia reported on the annual report of Israel's State Comptroller Yosef Shapira. It found that the Water Authority had missed a desalination output goal for 2020 set in 2008: the country's five plants supplied 585 million m³ a year against a target of 750 million m³. The authority replied that the figure had been meant as a ceiling. The comptroller also criticised the lack of a master plan that a 2010 government decision had called for. A sixth plant was not expected to operate before 2020.

The report showed how heavily Israel relied on desalination after four years of drought, and how a gap between planning and construction could directly affect farms and households.
