In November 2019, Euro Weekly News reported that the Mallorcan municipalities of Santanyí, Campos and Ses Salines were jointly calling for a new desalination plant. Santanyí mayor Maria Pons put the request to Joana Maria Garau, Director General of Water Resources at the Ministry of Environment. The goal was better drinking water for Santanyí, where quality was described as poor. The council also pressed for a faster link to the island network via Sa Marineta and planned an interim pipeline to Es Llombards.
The report showed how smaller island municipalities sought to secure drinking water both through a local desalination plant and through connection to a regional pipeline network.
