In January 2024, construction began in Lamharza Sahel near El Jadida on the seawater desalination plant for Greater Casablanca, part of the national water and irrigation programme 2020 to 2027. According to the Ministry of Equipment and Water, the 50 hectare plant was to deliver 200 million m³ per year, expandable to 300 million m³ by 2030, 250 million of it for drinking water. Newspaper Assabah reported that Acciona and Akwa subsidiaries Afriquia Gaz and Green of Africa won the contract at up to 4.5 dirhams per m³.
The report showed the scale of Morocco's plans at the time: a single plant for an entire metropolitan region including irrigation, at water prices well below other desalination projects in the country.
