Drought speeds up study for desalination plant, Tangier

In February 2024, Atalayar reported on emergency steps taken by the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region against the ongoing drought. According to official figures cited from Rue20, the level of the region's reservoirs had fallen by 61.28%. The water authority responsible for northern Morocco said it would push ahead faster with the study for a seawater desalination plant in Tangier. It also reduced the water allocated to the Dar Lakhroufa irrigation area near Larache and stopped issuing new permits to draw water from rivers and streams.

The report showed that Morocco was accelerating seawater desalination as a response to drought even in its comparatively wet north, alongside cuts for irrigation and new wells.
