In January 2021, Afrik 21 reported that Schneider Electric was close to finishing its work at the seawater desalination plant of New Alamein, a new city in north-western Egypt. The French group used its EcoStruxure platform there to automate the electrical system of the reverse osmosis plant with networked equipment and software. Egypt's Ministry of Defence and the Spanish firm Aqualia were building the plant together. Its design capacity was 150,000 m³/day, enough for a million people or more.
The report showed how automation suppliers brought digital control into large reverse osmosis plants to raise their availability and cut operating costs.
