In October 2017, Oman Observer reported on a desalination plant being built to provide Al Jabal al Akhdar in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate with drinking water. Rated at 1.76 million gallons per day, the plant had been under construction since August 2017 under the Public Authority for Electricity and Water (Diam) and was 60% complete. A 120 km pipeline network and three reservoirs of 800 to 5,000 m³ were to reach users around 38 km away. A soft launch was planned for December 2018, with full operation in March 2019.
The report showed that in 2017 Oman aimed to bring desalinated water even to remote mountain areas, accepting long pipelines through difficult terrain to do so.
