In December 2019, Argaam reported, citing a GE statement, that the Grid Solutions business of GE Renewable Energy had won a contract from ACCIONA for the desalination plant in Shuqaiq. GE was to design, build and commission a 380/132 kV gas-insulated substation, including transformers as well as automation and telecom equipment. The plant was to supply drinking water to more than 1.8 million people and be finished in 2021. The developer was an ACCIONA-led group with Marubeni, Rawafid Alhadarah Holding Company and Abdul Latif Jameel Commercial Development Co.
The report showed that a large desalination plant came with separate contracts for its grid connection. Power supply to the site was awarded as a distinct work package to an energy technology supplier.
