In December 2019, The Star in Kenya reported on a solar-powered desalination plant in Mtongwe on the Indian Ocean. It was set up by the Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya, funded by the Irene and Friedrich Vorwerk Foundation and Boreal Light GmbH. Pumping in seawater, the unit treated 2,000 litres an hour, or up to 20 m³/day. It was meant to serve 1,000 families and supply drip irrigation to demonstration farms. The mission put the cost at about KSh 9 million.
The report showed how small solar-powered units run by charities were filling supply gaps on the Kenyan coast, while larger municipal desalination projects in Mombasa had not yet started.
