In August 2021, Middle East Construction News reported that Acciona had secured the lead construction contract for Jubail 3B, an independent water plant in Saudi Arabia, valued at USD 398 million. Sited about 65 km north of Dammam airport, the reverse osmosis plant was designed to deliver 570,000 m³/day of drinking water to Jubail and Dammam, with one day of storage and its own renewable power to cut grid demand. A consortium of ENGIE, Nesma and Al Ajlan held the build, own, operate project; operation was planned for 2024.
The report showed the division of roles in large Saudi desalination projects: an investor consortium owned and financed the scheme, while a Spanish construction group built the plant as main contractor.
