In March 2021, Middle East Construction News reported that Guinness World Records had recognised the Saudi utility SWCC for the lowest energy use by a desalination plant, at 2.27 kWh per cubic metre of water. A joint statement said SWCC had invested in engineering and research skills and relied on its national workforce. Its new reverse osmosis plants ran under one integrated control system and were described as mobile, since their units could be assembled easily.
The report showed a state utility presenting the energy demand of reverse osmosis as a performance benchmark, tied to Vision 2030 goals and the use of local expertise.
