In March 2022, Technical Review Middle East reported that ACWA Power had signed a memorandum of understanding with WGA on the sidelines of the Saudi Water Forum. The aim was to further develop WGA's Hydraulic Injection Desalination (HID) and integrate it into ACWA Power projects. According to the companies, HID requires no chemical water treatment. Computational fluid dynamics modelling reportedly confirmed desalination of 40,000 ppm seawater at a specific energy consumption below 1.9 kWh, nearly a third lower than existing SWRO projects.
The report showed that large operators were looking beyond reverse osmosis at the time to cut the energy demand of seawater desalination; the figures came from simulations, not from plant operation.
