In April 2019, Free Malaysia Today ran an agency report credited to AFP stating that national water agency PUB would take control of Hyflux's Tuaspring desalination plant within 30 days and end its water supply agreement. A day earlier, regulators had announced a review of the company's disclosures. Hyflux was in court-supervised restructuring after a rescue deal with SM Investments collapsed. Tuaspring was the largest of Singapore's three desalination plants and could cover up to 17.5% of national water demand.
The report showed a state taking strategically important desalination capacity back into its own hands once the private operator had entered restructuring. Supply to the city was to remain secure whatever the outcome of the proceedings.
