Own desalination plant for local farming, Cuevas del Almanzora

In November 2020, Euro Weekly News reported that Aguas del Almanzora was about to present plans for its own desalination plant, according to its vice-president Fernando Rubio. Transfers from the El Negratín reservoir had stopped, and September and October had been the driest months in local memory. The 30 cubic hectometre plant was to stand close to the Villaricos facility at Cuevas del Almanzora, which had flooded in 2012 and stood idle since. The company was working with the Junta on permits.

The report showed growers turning to their own desalination after transfers dried up, aiming to make irrigation supply less dependent on decisions by public administrations.
