In December 2015, Water. Desalination + reuse (Faversham House) reported, citing local media, that the infrastructure ministry of St Kitts and Nevis was considering a new desalination plant. Minister Ian Patches Liburd said 2015 rainfall was only about half the usual level, cutting surface inflows and well yields. One option was to commission, at a site in Basseterre, a reverse osmosis unit kept for over eight years at La Vallee. As a stopgap, crews laid about 2 km of pipe between Dieppe Bay and Saddlers.
The report showed a small Caribbean island state turning to reverse osmosis as an extra water source after a very dry year. The first idea was to use an existing unit rather than build a new one.
