In August 2021, the Ministry of the Interior and Local Government of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (BARMM) handed three desalination machines worth 60 million Philippine pesos to the Provincial Government of Sulu. They were intended for the island towns of Hadji Panglima Tahil, Pandami and Pata. Each machine cost 20 million pesos and produced 22,000 litres per day (22 m³/day), operating eight to ten hours. They were the first three of ten sets for the provinces of Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.
Compared with large plants, the volumes were small. For the island towns served, however, the authorities framed it as a question of access to safe drinking water at all.
