Leak shuts down desalination plant, Trinidad

In November 2019, the Trinidad Express reported an unplanned shutdown of the Point Lisas desalination plant in Trinidad. According to a notice from the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA), a leak in the plant's fiberglass clearwell system required emergency repairs. Owner and operator Desalcott was assessing the damage. The plant supplied WASA with 40 million gallons of water a day for the Point Lisas Industrial Estate and communities in Central and South Trinidad. WASA increased output at its Caroni and Navet plants and deployed truck-borne water.

The report showed how heavily supply to a whole region depended on a single desalination plant: one leaking component was enough to affect industry and households at the same time.
