In October 2018, The National reported on three planned desalination plants in the Northern Emirates. The Federal Electricity and Water Authority and MDC Power Holding Company, owned by Mubadala Investment Company, were to build them in Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Together they were to supply 511 million litres of fresh water per day, around 511,000 m³/day. The plants were to use reverse osmosis, with the first phase scheduled for completion by 2021.
The report showed a turn towards less energy-intensive reverse osmosis in a country where, according to The National, almost all household water came from gas-fired desalination plants.
