In September 2019, KRWG Public Media reported that New Mexico State University (NMSU) belonged to a team awarded 100 million US dollars over five years by the U.S. Department of Energy for the Energy-Water Desalination Hub. The alliance, named National Alliance for Water Innovation (NAWI), brought together four national laboratories, 19 founding universities and ten industry partners. Professor Pei Xu led the NMSU share and was first to draft a technology roadmap for inland brackish water desalination. Test sites named were facilities in Alamogordo, New Mexico, and El Paso, Texas.

The report showed that in 2019 the USA pooled its research on energy-saving desalination and on unconventional sources such as brackish groundwater and produced water in one large alliance.
