Rehabilitated desalination plant back online, Zéralda

In November 2021, Pumps Africa reported that the rehabilitated seawater desalination plant in Zéralda, northern Algeria, had resumed operation. Water Resources Minister Karim Hasni cited 10,000 m³/day of drinking water for more than 65,000 people in Algiers. Zéralda was the third of four plants in an upgrade programme, after Palm Beach (7,500 m³/day, August) and Ain Benian (10,000 m³/day, September). The fourth plant, in Bou Ismaïl, was to grow from 3,000 to 10,000 m³/day. New plants in five wilayas were to supply more than 300,000 m³/day combined.

The report showed Algeria's response to drought: small existing plants were rehabilitated and expanded at short notice, while larger new coastal plants were prepared in parallel.
