In August 2024, Metro Pacific Water said it aimed to complete the Philippines' largest desalination plant in Iloilo City by 2026. In June, the Metro Pacific Investments Corp. subsidiary had signed with France-based Suez to build a P5-billion plant producing 66,500 m³/day. Construction was slated to begin late in the third quarter. Chief executive Christopher Andrew B. Pangilinan said the technology was about ten times more cost-efficient than a decade earlier.
The report shows an archipelago testing desalination at scale: a private concessionaire carries the pilot risk, and if it succeeds the model is meant to be replicated on other islands.
