In March 2021, Acciona announced that it would optimise operations at the Umm Al Houl reverse osmosis plant in Qatar with its Maestro AI platform, Middle East Construction News reported, citing a company statement. The AI was meant to cut energy and chemical consumption, with Acciona estimating savings of 12,000 tons of CO2 per year. The plant was due to start in April, producing 564,000 m³/day for 1.1 million people. Acciona's decarbonisation fund financed the project.

The report shows operators beginning to apply live data analysis to large reverse osmosis plants. Energy and chemical use came to the fore as levers for both cost and emissions.
