In March 2022, SA Water and construction partners John Holland and Guidera O'Connor began building a seawater desalination plant near Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island, Utility Magazine reported. More than $64 million was being invested in the plant, sized at 2,000 m³/day. A 50 km water main was laid in parallel to connect more than a thousand residents in four communities that had relied on rainwater tanks.
The report shows a desalination project on the island designed to bring both drinking water and a pipe network with fire plugs for bushfire response. Supply security and emergency preparedness were planned together.
