In December 2015, Water. Desalination + reuse (Faversham House) reported that Energy Recovery had secured a US$2.3 million order for the Dongjiakou desalination plant in Shandong province. The plant was designed for 100,000 m³/day. The company was to ship PX-Q300 pressure exchangers in the second quarter of 2016, working with Beijing Originwater Technology. By the supplier's own estimate, the units would cut the plant's power demand by 8.5 MW, save more than 73 GWh a year and avoid 43,800 tonnes of CO2 annually.

The report showed the weight given to energy recovery at large Chinese plants of that period, with suppliers framing the benefit mainly in energy and emissions saved.
