In December 2015, Water. Desalination + reuse (Faversham House) reported that Texas utility San Antonio Water System (SAWS) planned to start a brackish water desalination plant by October 2016, eventually meant to be the biggest of its kind nationally. Feed water came from the brackish Wilcox Aquifer beneath the Carrizo Aquifer. The US$ 114 million project would cover 8% of regional supply, easing on the Edwards Aquifer, which supplied 63% of SAWS water. Brine was to go into deep wells almost one mile (1.6 km) down.
The report showed how inland utilities tapped brackish groundwater as an additional resource and, far from the coast, relied on deep well injection for brine.
