In December 2015, Water. Desalination + reuse (Faversham House) reported, citing Veolia, that the expansion of the Sharqiyah Desalination Company plant in Sur, Oman, had reached 70% completion. A revised offtake contract with the state buyer, Oman Power and Water Procurement Company, allowed 51,000 m³/day to be added to the existing 80,000 m³/day. Completion was planned for mid-2016. The plant dated from 2007, built by OTV, a Veolia subsidiary, together with Bahwan Engineering, and the Bahwan Veolia joint venture ran it.
The report showed Oman enlarging existing desalination sites through amended offtake contracts to meet rising drinking water demand from a growing population with scarce resources.
