In July 2019, the Financial Tribune reported, citing the Iranian Energy Ministry's news portal, that 60 desalination plants with a combined capacity of over 242,000 m³/day were operating in Iran. 39 units with about 174,000 m³/day had been added over the previous six years, mostly on the southern coast. Another 25 projects were under construction and were to add 300,000 m³/day by 2021. The report named provinces including Bushehr, Hormozgan, Khuzestan, Kerman and Fars.
The figures show that in 2019 Iran planned to more than double its desalination capacity within about two years, relying mainly on plants along its southern coast.
