In August 2019, the Corpus Christi City Council in Texas approved a plan that moved the city closer to a seawater desalination plant. Candidate sites were the Corpus Christi Ship Channel and the La Quinta corridor in San Patricio County. The plant was to produce 10 million gallons a day (about 38,000 m³/day), expandable to 20 million. City officials put the cost at 140 million US dollars, plus a potential 50 million for expansion, funded through a Texas Water Development Board loan. Water production was targeted for late 2022.
The report showed a city planning desalination partly because of growing industrial high-volume users. Part of the financing was to come from a surcharge paid by exactly those large users.
