In April 2022, Veolia Water Technologies announced the Asia Pacific launch of the Barrel, in a press release published by Wastewater Digest. The prefabricated reverse osmosis system, housed in a carbon steel pressure vessel, covers 400 to 50,000 m³ per day per unit. Veolia cited a footprint reduction of up to 25 percent, around 0.05 kWh/m³ lower power use and only two high-pressure connections. It was shown at CleanEnviro Summit Singapore and OzWater 2022 in Brisbane. The technology had been used at the Sur desalination plant in Oman since 2019.
The report showed the trend towards prefabricated, modular reverse osmosis units designed to shorten on-site installation and reduce operating risks at high-pressure connections. The performance figures came from the manufacturer itself.
