In March 2022, BNamericas reported that desalination projects in Chile were advancing despite regulatory uncertainty. Carlos Foxley, chairman of the desalination association Acades, described two parallel pushes: one in the constitutional convention on water management and a desalination bill in the senate that would include a national strategy. Enzo García of Aguas Nuevas put installed capacity at nearly 1 million m³/day. Oceanus planned to submit its 500 million US dollar Azul project in Coquimbo, with 600 l/s and 185 MW storage, for environmental evaluation that year.
The report showed a growing market in which investors were waiting for new rules. Capacity, projects and legislation were developing at the same time, before the framework was settled.
