In August 2022, ABC News reported that a 22-member committee had chosen private land between Fishery Bay and Sleaford Bay as the site for a 5.3-gigalitre desalination plant on Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. Earlier sites near Port Lincoln and Sleaford Mere had met opposition. Committee chair Peter Treloar said Sleaford West cost more than Billy Lights Point but met community requirements on environment and social benefit. Without the plant, the region's 35,000 water customers faced insufficient supply by 2025. Planned capacity had risen by 30 per cent.
The report showed a participatory process in which aquaculture, agriculture, business and local government representatives jointly decided where a desalination plant should go.
