In August 2022, German industrial group Butting was commissioned to supply a modular, prefabricated reverse osmosis desalination plant for Israel. Located south of Tel Aviv, the plant was scheduled to start producing in 2023. It consisted of 192 prefitted modules housing nearly 5 km of piping, manufactured at Butting's factory in Tieling, Liaoning province, China. More than 95% of the seams were to be welded and non-destructively tested in the factory to keep site work to a minimum.
The report showed the trend towards prefabrication: a large share of the work on a desalination plant moved from the site to the factory, with modules delivered just in time.
