In October 2022, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) received the Guinness World Records title for the world's largest single-site water desalination facility. The Jebel Ali complex reached 490 million imperial gallons per day, about 2,227,587 m³/day, from 43 multi-stage flash (MSF) units with 427 million gallons and two reverse osmosis plants with 63 million gallons. By 2030, DEWA aimed to raise the reverse osmosis share from 13 to 42 percent, with total capacity of 730 million gallons.
The report showed a large, thermally based site in transition: new capacity was to come mainly from less energy-intensive reverse osmosis, supported by underground storage as an emergency reserve.
