In December 2015, Water. Desalination + reuse (Faversham House) reported that an expansion of the Fujairah 1 water and power plant in the United Arab Emirates was complete and running. Sembcorp Industries and Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) invested US$ 200 million. Desalination output grew by 30 % to 650,000 m³/day, with reverse osmosis supplying more than half. Under a 20-year deal, Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Company took the added 150,000 m³/day. A joint venture with a 40 % Sembcorp stake ran the site.

The report showed a pattern of extending an existing power station site with reverse osmosis and using spare electricity for it. Fujairah 1 thereby moved into the group of the Middle East's biggest reverse osmosis plants.
