In November 2017, The Nation reported that Nawab Sanaullah Zehri, Chief Minister of Balochistan, voiced his displeasure at a briefing in Gwadar over the city's non-working desalination plant. Designed for 2 million gallons, the facility was not meeting demand for drinking water. The Rs 984 million project had been handed to the Public Health Engineering department in May 2016 but remained out of action owing to technical faults. Construction had begun in 2006. Zehri ordered the plant to be made operational without delay.

The report showed that a desalination plant in Gwadar was still not delivering water eleven years after construction began, while the provincial government saw the city as a future trade hub.
