In May 2019, The Peninsula reported that state utility Kahramaa and Umm Al Houl Power had amended their supply agreement. The change added 61.5 million gallons a day of desalination output, about 280,000 m³/day. Umm Al Houl was to build and run the expansion as a reverse osmosis plant, lifting the site to 198 million gallons daily by 2021. Samsung was named as main contractor, with Acciona as supplier and subcontractor.
The report showed Qatar choosing reverse osmosis to expand an existing power and water site. According to the parties, the technology used less gas than the multi-stage flash process also operated there.
