In October 2020, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Poseidon was set to dredge the Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad. Poseidon ran the local desalination plant, which drew seawater through intakes once used by the Encina power plant. Power companies had kept the lagoon open since 1954. Work was to start in November or early December and end by mid-April. Roughly 300,000 cubic yards of material were to be taken out, with sand going to the beach north of the inlet again after a gap of roughly five years.
The report showed that running a seawater desalination plant on a lagoon also brought maintenance duties that had previously rested with the power station.
