In October 2020, The Times of India reported that the Chennai locality of Ullagaram-Puzhuthivakkam finally had mains water, almost ten years after joining the city corporation. Metrowater had connected 1,230 households, whose demand of 1,000 m³/day came from the Nemmeli desalination plant on East Coast Road. Five to seven new connections followed each day, requested through the Azhaithal Inaippu scheme. In neighbouring Madipakkam similar works were under way, aiming to link nearly every resident by 2022.
The report showed that desalinated seawater in Chennai was not only about large projects but directly supplied new household connections in recently incorporated parts of the city.
