In September 2020, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah visited the reverse osmosis plant under construction on Karachi's Manora peninsula, Gulf News reported. Work was 40 per cent complete. The provincial government was spending Rs 427.6 million, and the plant was to deliver five million gallons a day for around 200,000 residents, reducing salinity to 500 mg/l TDS. Completion was targeted by 30 June 2021.
The report shows Karachi's second attempt at seawater desalination, this time aimed at low-income residents rather than an affluent district. The plant was sized for the needs of a single peninsula.
