In October 2020, Water Tech Online published a press release from IDE Technologies stating that Aguas Pacífico SpA had awarded it the EPC contract to build the Aconcagua desalination facility. The reverse osmosis facility in Quintero Bay, Valparaíso Region, was designed for 86,400 m³/day, or 1,000 litres per second. It was to supply municipal, farming, industrial and mining customers in the Aconcagua basin. IDE cited more than 20 of its plants running in Chile since 1990.
The report showed a model in which one seawater desalination plant was to serve several customer groups at once, rather than a single mine or city, as a drought-proof source for a whole region.
