Egypt's Holding Company for Drinking Water and Wastewater has awarded contracts to operate and maintain eleven seawater desalination plants, worth around EGP 4.6 billion. The plants have a combined capacity of 485,000 m³ per day: seven in North and South Sinai with 240,000 m³, three in Matrouh with 165,000 m³ and Yusr on the Red Sea with 80,000 m³. Companies named include Orascom Construction, Metito with Orascom, Elsewedy Utilities and Proserv. According to housing minister Randa El-Menshawy, Egypt operates around 129 plants with about 1.4 million m³ per day.
Egypt is bringing private operators into day-to-day operation, not only into construction. The report does not say which company takes which plant or how long the contracts run.
