In July 2016, the US development finance institution OPIC gave the Hamma seawater desalination plant in Algiers an Impact Award in the critical infrastructure category. The 200,000 m³/day reverse osmosis plant served 1.5 million residents and met 25 per cent of the city's freshwater needs. Its project company was selected in 2008 and financed 70 per cent by GE and 30 per cent by the Algerian Energy Company. GE operated the plant under a 25-year contract.

The report, a GE press release, illustrated public-private desalination in North Africa: Hamma was described as the first reverse osmosis plant in Africa funded by public and private investment.
