In October 2018, Water. Desalination + reuse (Faversham House), citing TXF, reported that Bahrain's Electricity and Water Authority had picked a consortium headed by Acwa Power as its preferred bidder for the Al Dur 2 water and power project. Plans covered a gas-fired power station of 1,500 MW and a seawater reverse osmosis unit producing 227,305 m³/day (50 MIGD). The price was set at around US$1.5 billion, with completion targeted for the fourth quarter of 2020. Two groups had submitted bids.
The report showed that Bahrain was awarding large combined power and desalination schemes to private consortia, with reverse osmosis planned at more than 200,000 m³ a day.
