In November 2020, Tehran Times, citing the IRNA agency, reported that President Hassan Rouhani had inaugurated by video link the first phase of a scheme to bring desalinated water from the Persian Gulf to the provinces of Hormozgan and Kerman. Investment totalled 163 trillion rials, roughly 3.88 billion US dollars. Phase one comprised 305 km of pipeline, seven pumping stations, ten substations and 150 km of power lines. Water was to reach Kerman and Bandar Abbas, and national desalination capacity was to rise by 50 percent.
The report showed how Iran linked coastal seawater desalination with long pipelines to its dry interior to supply drinking water and industry.
