In October 2019, Iraq Business News reported that Iraq's cabinet under Prime Minister Adil Abd Al-Mahdi had endorsed a Ministry of Oil letter of intent. It allowed the ministry to commission the Italian group ENI to supply and set up two desalination units in Al-Baradiya, Basra Province. Each unit is designed for 400 m³ per hour, or roughly 9,600 m³/day. The contract was valued at 24,965,768 US dollars, just under 25 million US dollars.
The report showed that desalination in southern Iraq was also procured through the oil ministry and an international energy group, in this case as a modest project of around 25 million US dollars.
