In June 2018, CBN News reported that Israel's cabinet, after five dry winters in a row, approved a 30 million US dollar programme to refill the Sea of Galilee along with seven northern streams. For the first time, desalinated water was to be pumped into the lake, starting the following year and rising to 100 million m³ over four years. The plan also covered two further desalination plants, on the Western Galilee coast and at Sorek. The lake stood about 213.46 metres below sea level.
The report showed a reversal of the usual water flows: instead of drawing water from the lake for the country, coastal seawater desalination was to support the nation's main freshwater reservoir.
