In May 2021, The Star reported that a 40-foot container holding a reverse osmosis unit had arrived from Belgium in Kavunzoni village, Ganze constituency, Kilifi county. The unit was to desalinate water from a borehole drilled there by the Belgian organisation Kitanda. Stephen Thethe, acting chief of Mitangani, said the borehole would supply over 80 households across the villages of Goshi, Mitsedzini and Kavunzoni, the first freshwater source in the area. Installation was on hold until engineers from Belgium could travel, which lockdown rules there still prevented.
The report showed small-scale desalination reaching remote villages whose residents had at times walked more than 30 km to reach a water point.
