In July 2021, the broadcaster KJZZ reported that the Comcaac community of Punta Chueca on the Gulf of California, in Sonora, Mexico, had received no water from its faltering desalination plant for five weeks. Tankers funded by the government or by residents fell short; some families lacked storage drums. A new plant had been promised, but its construction was running late, and attempts to drill a well had yielded only salt water. Cultural ambassador Zara Monrroy set up the collective Hax Isax to fund deliveries and drums.
The report showed how dependent remote coastal towns could be on a single desalination plant when wells yielded only salt water and tanker trucks could not cover the outage.
