In March 2019, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Oceanside, California, had secured a federal grant of $2.6 million for two additional wells. They tap brackish groundwater in the Mission Basin, which the city treats by reverse osmosis. Wells and treatment equipment were budgeted at $10.4 million, with $7.8 million from the city. A brine optimization unit was also planned to recover more fresh water per well. The wells' share of supply was to rise from about 10 to roughly 15 percent.
The report showed how a Southern California coastal city used brackish water desalination and reuse to cut its need for imported water, aiming to cover half its demand locally by 2030.
